The election of four Green councillors in April 2019 came as something of a surprise to us all. It has since become clear that there is an appetite for real change at all levels of society and particularly in our institutions, and the change in composition of Wells City Council certainly reflects that. Greens now comprise 25% of the council and with the Wells Independents make up over half of the councillors. If we can all work together then it is clear that we can effect change even at this tier of local government.
The most obvious change has been the setting up of the Climate Emergency committee, following on from the declaration of a Climate Emergency by the outgoing council. Greens are adamant that this involves everyone, not just Green councillors, and it is good to see local people coming forward with their knowledge and enthusiasm to join the various working groups.
The Open Spaces committee and the Planning committee are also providing real opportunities for implementing some practical changes to heal and enhance our environment.
Members of the public can attend all committee and full council meetings. You can find details here: https://www.wells.gov.uk/uploads/documents/General/CouncilDiary-2019-20.pdf
Do come along and see for yourselves.
